Milestone

When prego, there are all these milestones that you read and hear about such as surviving the first trimester, getting an ultrasound and so on. Well, yesterday I surpassed another one:
I felt the baby kick
This might be my favorite milestone as it is a wonderful confirmation of life inside of you. The expansion of your body, your moodiness and lethargy all serve a larger purpose. And that purpose is now tapping on your belly.

I've been anticipating this moment for many weeks because The Books say that you should start to feel movement between 17 and 22 weeks. Its kind of a large timeframe but, from the day I hit 17 weeks, I've been attempting to decipher any movement in my belly. This was not easy as I've got my muscles stretching (sensation #1), combined with gas (sensation #2), combined with general digestive processes/stomach grumblings (sensation #3). Yet, yesterday I got a definitive thump...thump...thump and knew this was completely different. "Thump" is perhaps too strong of a word. Perhaps a 'resounding flutter' is more accurate.

The Books also say that the baby is most likely to be active when you are still and sleeping when you are active. So when I am huffing and puffing away on the Eliptical machine, the baby is fast asleep. When I plop down in bed to fall asleep, the baby gets an 'alarm' to wake up. To me, this illustrates why vacuum cleaners, wacky vibrating swings and car rides are so extremely soothing for a baby. "I'll take my baby shaken, thank you."

Lady, take a break. Take a walk. Talk to a trusted adult.
Never, EVER shake a baby.

Wait till you feel them hiccup. It's so cute to feel the rhythmic thumps and you know they are hiccups because just normal moving around will feel totally different. I also like when I would see the occasional foot stick out. I'd grab it but it would instantly recede back to the watery depths. so cute.

Thanks for the calm intervention, Karmatee ;) Baby shall not be shaken.

Naech: I'm sorry...are you talking about grabbing the baby's foot while it is still in your belly? And you can tell it is a foot? How does that work exactly? And, is this the scene when the alien explodes out of your belly? Sounds kinda freaky.

It's more like a small bulge out the side. I assume it's their foot and they're stretching. Could have been an elbow, but it was so...pointy. He was in the transverse position for a long time, hence the foot out the side.

(I had to Google transverse position) a pointy 'thing' pushing out from your belly sounds very foreign. so did he twirl himself around to be positioned correctly?

"I'd grab it but it would instantly recede back to the watery depths." This does not sound cute. This sounds like a monster from Pirates of the Carribbean. Lady, THERE IS A PERSON INSIDE YOU. I cannot get over that.
