The joys and perils of working remotely

My company is based in Denver and I am the sole staff person for an office in Glenwood Springs. This setup definitely has its benefits. I have no direct supervision except to an annoying time sheet that I must complete. A laptop and cell phone further facilitate a level of independence. I have therefore filled my days with:
  • taking in the recycling
  • surfing the Internet
  • taking a anap
  • shopping online
  • emailing with friends
  • going to doctor's appointments
  • doing volunteer work
I rationalize this as I feel the time that I do work is exceptionally focused and efficient. Tadah! I love rationalizing!

There are, however, some serious downfalls:
  • too many conference calls
  • no real workmates
  • no insta-lunch buddies
  • an overall sense of isolation
This set-up encourages extremes of totally loving versus totally hating my job. If I am in a slacker period or have a lot of personal stuff going on, it is pretty freakin' ideal. However, if I am swamped and overwhelmed and/or hormal, it sucks.

Maybe I should buy a blow-up doll and just have her sit in my office. That way, I'd have a companion but she wouldn't cause me any grief...

DO NOT get a blow up doll. What is wrong with you. How about relocate your office to Durango? I can't promise to sit in your office 24-7, but I will TOTALLY be your insta-lunch-buddy.

I feel the same exact way about the love/hate thing.. and lately I am more on the hate side of the fence.
