We have our first egg! Ain't she cute?
I was up in the chicken house last night performing the usual chores - cleaning and filling the water containers, filling the food and scattering scraps around. I peered over to the nesting area and SURPRISE! There was a small brown egg in one of the nests. Of course, I immediately spun around and shrieked for the Hubby to come and see.
It is a rather small egg but surprisingly perfect. In our reading to determine what-the-heck-you-do-with-chickens, hens have to practice their egg-laying technique. Some of the eggs may have weak or deformed shells. You have to feed them ground up rocks or shells and allow them to practice. I am quite proud that one of our hens has stepped up to the plate and laid a perfect first egg (I am always an overachiever). And while I have sworn to not have a personal relationship with any of the chickens, I have a very strong sense that 'my favorite' laid the egg. From the beginning, she has always been a bit more self-assured and independent. She also doesn't allow the roosters to mount her (more on that in a future posting) and is quite pretty. She was also standing right outside the nest when I found the egg (odd that she wasn't sitting on it though, huh? maybe she resented the thing that just passed through her body).

I washed the egg and put it in a bowl in the refrigerator. I am not sure what we are going to do with it. Fried? Scrambled? More to come!
