The transition from D.C. to Denver and now to western CO has definitely felt like taking gigantic steps away from the Corporate Ladder. However, I have recently discovered a new ladder. It is the I-am-the-best-most-outdoorsy person ladder. People here are CRAZY. During ski season, people go from a full day of black diamond runs to backcountry skiing to running races up snowy mountains. During the warmer seasons, people throw their kayaks and mountain bikes in the car to go kayak, hit the trails and then, after that, go run a marathon through a desert. People here are ADVENTURE freaks. There is also this constant undertone of outdoing your next buddy. "Dude. The river is flowing just right now. Granted, its like so cold that we could die but you aren't going to wimp out, are you?"
I always considered myself to be sporty but, quite honestly, I am put to shame next to some of these folks. I stand firmly on the lowest rung.
Case 1: Last weekend we decide to head to Loma to do some mountain biking. Team Idaho comes to our place and load the bikes up and get ready to head out. I exclaim that I am so excited to go on this adventure as I've never really done any real mountain biking. Mr. Idaho stops what he is doing - "WHAT?! You've never been mountain biking?" The look on his face is sheer terror with a splash of disgust. Not worthy! Not worthy!
Once in Loma, we start out. We are doing a 'beginner to expert' loop. What the hell kind of designation is that?! The first ascent quickly highlighted the fact that one should be in the lowest gear. Oops! Lesson learned!! The trail moves beyond beginner into this 'expert' stuff. The wide trail is replaced by singletrack (not the beer but a trail that is only wide enough for one mountain biker at a time) that has a sheer drop on one side and gnarley bolders on the other. Realizing my own limitations + fear of heights, I get off of my bike and start walking. A hord of butch middle-aged women pass me and glare. Hello?! We ain't in D.C. anymore. I mean - shit! - I moved out of the way for them and everything. Could they really judge me that quickly?! Its like I held the prized red stapler or something. As the Hubby moves out of the way for them, he hears them lament "if that man wasn't there, i could have totally done that step!" Is that really necessary? Damn, Gina!
And so, I stand on this new bizarre ladder.

I am sorry, but that whole "I'm more hard core than you" attitude is obnoxious. In the city, it was always who had the wildest night life. Out here, it's all about who has the most dangerous hobby. I will happily sit on the lowest rung with you. We can watch everyone else fall off.
